Free 24-Hour Net Surfing May Soon Become Reality

In the not too distant future 24-hour internet connectivity and zero telephone bills will become a reality in homes in Mumbai's western suburbs, with BSES Telecom preparing to provide last mile connectivity within the next couple of months. About 250 homes have already been connected in the Bandra-Khar area. In addition to the 250 homes connected in Bandra-Khar, ISP has also connected 42 corporate offices in Seepz, Bandra-Kurla complex and MIDC. The total bandwith dedicated to corporate clients is in the region of 14 mbps.

By next Valentine's Day, virtual roses will be as sniff-worthy as the real thing; thanks to Sandeep Jaidka, an Indian inventor who has been granted a US patent for virtual smells and sensations. His invention called the Rudraksh R3- has been awarded a US patent for both the device and the process used for producing these effects. With global research organisations and MNC's sinking $12000m into similar research efforts, the Delhi based inventor could well sniff his way to the bank. The impersonal e-cards and greetings of today will have sweet smell of chocolate wafling across to your beloved one. Coded signals to produce the effect of waterfalls, gardens, mountains, deserts, animals, forests and even household smells from the kitchen are embeded onto an electronic coder. The digital programming helps decoding at the precise moment when the film or tape reaches a particular scene or line.

Network To Offer Domain Names In Indian Languages !
Network Solutions, the largest domain name registration company of the world will be offering domain name in Indian languages from March this year. This would mean that the users can register the first name in the domain name (before the .dot) in Indian language characters.

A 20 year old man from the northern Dutch province of Friesland turned himself in and was detained on suspicion of damaging computer programs and property

Tata AIG General Insurance Company is set to launch the first ever cover against cyber extortion and hacking in India. The product offers protection against computer crime to the extent of $25 million. Worldwide, extortionists have been targetting internet banking, media websites and electronic commerce in a big way. A virtual music store- CD Universe got wiped out by a hacker. He threatened to disclose the credit card numbers he had got from the site and demanded a hefty ransom. Despite intervention by FBI and CIA, the 10,000 credit cards numbers were openly posted on the website.

We already know that junk email commonly known on the Internet as spam is a pain in the neck. But did you realize what a pain in the wallet it is too? That message is out now, thanks to a study by the European Commission showing that junk e-mail costs receipents an estimated $9.3 billion a year. Comsatmax, a Vast service provider and a joint venture company of the US based Lockheed Martin and Max India, plans to introduce internet security services for the network communication market in the country. The security service forms part of Lockheed's portfolio of products and their introduction in India follows the takeover of Comsat in US by $26bn Lockheed Martin Corporation. Most security companies are currently offering stage two solutions which is more of a product sale. Accordingly companies have built up software expertise to implement firewalls.However this is only part of the story and may prove to be a short term, incomplete and expensive solution. The third and final stage is monitor the network and firewalls continuously and based on the happenings take actions to protect the network.

The 25-39 year age group accounted for 27 percent of the population.As we move up the "age" ladder, Internet numbers diminish.In fact,only 7 percent of the Internet population is between 40-54 years of age.The above 55 years age group was a mere 3 percent. A significant development is that almost 10 percent of people over the age of 40 now access the Net. The Internet in India continued to be a male dominated arena.Indian males accounted for a healthy 75 percent of the population accessing the Net. While more women accessed the Internet last year,there certainly is much more room to grow.

Tatas In The Internet Business

Petrol pumps will now be home to swanky cyber cafes. Tata Internet Services (TISL), a company promoted by Tata Industries plans to set up internet cafes in petrol pumps ( or petro-outlets) owned by Bharat Petroleum all over the country. TISL has plans to set up 40 Public Internet Centres (cyber-cafes) in prominent metros across 12 cities. Over 15 public internet centres have already gone functional in Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. Tatas have also launched its ISP services 'Tatanova', which will provide consumer and corporate internet access services, develop and run portals, provide network management services and data centres.
